From Our Readers July 22, 1: Come sit by me. Basically, I wanted a job where I could just be myself all the time, only coming out for rare occasions, like a book signing or winning an Oscar for screenwriting or something important like that. While I still hold that dream, my actual big girl career as a professor and dean requires me to not only be around people, but to be good at being around people. What started as a career path based on my love of books and writing has evolved into me talking to massive groups, training faculty, attending social events, and working with all kinds of people all day. Finally, it got to the point where my misery was greater than my dislike of socializing and I decided to just launch myself out there into the world.
And the discovery I made changed my life: I had been using my introversion as a crutch. Before going any further, I want to be absolutely clear: In fact, deep-thinking introverts make some very unique and essential contributions to the world.
