Medical professionals use a standard set of up to three methods to date pregnancies: That way, regardless of where they trained or where they practice, any two doctors dating a pregnancy will predict the same due date or gestational age. However, the timing of the actual delivery is not so predictable. Some women will deliver on their due date, others before, and others after. The body is not on a clock counting down to delivery; natural variation will introduce uncertainty.

How accurate are due dates given by ultrasound measurements? I’ve been told 4 different ones at first i was measuring small edd of feb. 19 then i was told feb. 25 and then feb. 27 now im 34 weeks and the baby and i are both measuring 36 weeks which puts me at feb. 4 and the baby is in head down position, im so confused!!

PM emsyj the 12 week scan is the most accurate, babies grow at a very predictable rate between 10 and 13 week roughly so they can date you accurately from your 12 week scan and in most circumstances will stick with this date no matter what any future scans say. Having said that my date has been changed late on and like you Fairythalia it makes absolutely no sense. Around 20 weeks I moved to a different area and changed hospitals, at 28 weeks I had a scan that dated me at 26th Jan.

I discussed this with my consultant who said they would rather use their own dates and because it is only 8 days difference there is no risk of them delivering baby too early if they induce me 12 days over that date. However this new date means I would have had to have conceived during my last period so makes no sense at all. You must be really peeved to have gone from 8 weeks to 6 weeks, I was so excited to jump from 35 to 36 weeks, I would have been gutted if they moved me in the opposite direction!!

Presumably you are having another scan at 12 weeks? I would wait until then and it should correct itself to a more accurate date as I said baby grows at a very predictable rate then and millimetres of difference can date you very accurately. Sorry you are so frustrated by your scan and good luck for the next one!!

Objective: To compare the accuracy of the reported date of the last menstrual period (LMP) with that of symphysis-fundal height (SFH) in the estimation of gestational age (GA), using an ultrasound (US) scan as reference. Methods: Gestational age was concurrently assessed by the 3 methods in this.

Would you base due date off of LMP or Dating ultrasound? Bookmark Discussion julyair33 wrote: I’m a first time mom and according to my last menstrual period, I’m due on September 16th. When I got my dating ultrasound done they said I’m due September 21! I know it’s not a huge difference but I’m sure you ladies can empathize with how long the days feel in the end!

Just wondering if I should just assume I’ll be “overdue” because of my ultrasound. Thanks in advance and happy deliveries to all!!

LMP and Ultrasound dating

Received 27 June ; revised 28 July ; accepted 28 August ABSTRACT Rapid and accurate determination of gestational age GA may be vital to the appropriate care of the critically ill pregnant patient and improve obstetric care through allowing the optimal timing of necessary interventions and the avoidance of unnecessary ones. Ultrasound scans are considered to be the most cost-effective, accurate and safe methods for measurement of various fetal parts in pregnant women.

The aim of this research is to explore the accuracy of ultrasound in determining gestational age of fetus in third trimesters. Only women with single live fetus were included in this study. Women who participated in the study were selected on following criteria: Regular menstrual cycles, known date of last menstrual period and previous live normal neonates in multipara.

Doppler Ultrasound The doppler shift principle has been used for a long time in fetal heart rate detectors. Further developments in doppler ultrasound technology in recent years have enabled a great expansion in its application in Obstetrics, particularly in the area of assessing and monitoring the well-being of the fetus, its progression in the face of intrauterine growth restriction, and the diagnosis of cardiac malformations.

Doppler ultrasound is presently most widely employed in the detection of fetal cardiac pulsations and pulsations in the various fetal blood vessels. The “Doptone” fetal pulse detector is a commonly used handheld device to detect fetal heartbeat using the same doppler principle. Blood flow characteristics in the fetal blood vessels can be assessed with Doppler ‘flow velocity waveforms’.

Diminished flow, particularly in the diastolic phase of a pulse cycle is associated with compromise in the fetus. Various ratios of the systolic to diastolic flow are used as a measure of this compromise. The blood vessels commonly interrogated include the umbilical artery , the aorta , the middle cerebral arteries , the uterine arcuate arteries , and the inferior vena cava. The use of color flow mapping can clearly depict the flow of blood in fetal blood vessels in a realtime scan, the direction of the flow being represented by different colors.

Color doppler is particularly indispensible in the diagnosis of fetal cardiac and blood vessel defects , and in the assessment of the hemodynamic responses to fetal hypoxia and anemia. A more recent development is the Power Doppler Doppler angiography. It uses amplitude information from doppler signals rather than flow velocity information to visualize slow flow in smaller blood vessels. A color perfusion-like display of a particular organ such as the placenta overlapping on the 2-D image can be very nicely depicted.

International conference on transition and cord clamping at birth April It is increasingly recognised that the circulatory changes involved in transition at birth cannot occur within a few seconds of birth. While the healthy fetal circulation and the healthy neonatal circulation are moderately well understood, the underlying triggers, the precise sequence and speed of the changes in the circulation are not.

How can we interefere in something we do not understand? Nearly all textbooks and journals which include the physiological transition of the neonate at birth describe a marked change in the peripheral vascular resistance and an increase in the afterload of the heart.

first trimester is therefore more accurate than later in pregnancy [6]. When performed with quality and precision, ultrasound alone is more accurate than a “certain” menstrual date for determining gestational age in the first and second trimesters (≤23 weeks) in spontaneous conceptions, and it.

Your midwife or GP will only recommend an early scan if there’s a concern, for example, if you’ve had bleeding in this pregnancy.

Your GP may also refer you for a scan if you’ve had a previous miscarriage. Many hospitals have early pregnancy assessment units EPAUs that run daily. This means you can be referred for an early scan straight away, if needed. Your sonographer may ask to carry out a vaginal scan rather than one via your tummy. A vaginal scan can offer a clearer picture of your baby earlier in pregnancy than an abdominal scan.

Accuracy of pregnancy dating scan 25 Mar I’ve read that early on, dating scan due dates are pretty accurate 2 days. What information is gained from an early pregnancy scan? How accurate is pregnancy dating? The day Early dating scans are considered the most accurate, later scans not so much.

Once a certain stage of development is reached, around 8 weeks or 10, then the dating from the ultrasound will be taken as more accurate than the LMP date, and your EDD will be assumed from the dating scan.

Historically, the first day of the last menstrual period LMP became the date from which pregnancy is counted even though conception occurs about two weeks later. The LMP formula is good for working out an initial age of pregnancy but ultrasound is more accurate. Age of pregnancy may be revised following your ultrasound scan. If you don’t have a valid LMP date for any reason, your doctor will provide one for you, most likely based on ultrasound measurements.

Definitions EDD is an abbreviation for estimated due date. LMP is an abbreviation for last menstrual period, which is the first day of your last period. Gestational age is the age of pregnancy when counted from LMP or two weeks before conception. Fetal age is the age of pregnancy when counted from Conception. How Long is Pregnancy? Pregnancy is 40 weeks from the first day of the last menstrual period LMP to the estimated due date.

This method of measuring pregnancy adds an extra two weeks since counting starts approximately two weeks before baby is conceived.
